Collaborations and remixes are the rule of thumb in the world of hit singles these days. The reason Lil Nas X was able to stay so many weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard charts is that each remix/new collaboration brought new attention from fans but were considered the same entry by Billboard’s method of counting. I don’t know if that has anything to do with what For King & Country have been up to or not but it turns out they are no strangers to featured guests and collaborations.
God Only Knows came out last year. It made the rounds on Contemporary Christian radio and the original official video has something like 1.1 million views on YouTube. About three months ago they released a Timbaland remix. I first thought maybe it was fan made or they meant remixed in the Timbaland style but no it’s totally him. Then on August 30th For King & Country released another remix, this one featuring Dolly Parton. If Timbaland seems like an unlikely pairing a Dolly remix… It just doesn’t strike me as being a Dolly Parton song. I know she grew up singing in church. There was a single Gospel song, He’s Alive, on her 1989 album White Limozeen. (Yes that’s spelled correctly and He’s Alive is one of my all time favorites.)
I’ve listen to it again 3 or 4 times in the last 24 hours. Below is the For King & Country, Dolly Parton remix of God Only Knows. Here is the Timbaland remix and the original official video if you need those links.
It’s a good song no matter which version you prefer, the Timbaland remix is most notable for its visuals. Dolly herself commented on the YouTube video, her reply being pinned to the top of the comments by For King & Country.
