Satur-deja Vu

Bestie and wackadoodle were added to the Oxford English Dictionary back in 2014. Wackadoodle is one of those words I don’t think we hear enough of so I like to drop it into conversation. Here are some other fun facts, news items and random bits and pieces that you may or may not have caught. Welcome to the Satur-deja Vu.

In the Terminator franchise humans rebel against the machines trying to kill them off and take over the world. If the machines start a war it’s in our nature to fight. But what if the machines were making fast food hamburgers? This is a much more subtle plan. We the human race will remain complacent as robots stuff us with burgers and fries until we eat ourselves to death. I don’t know if the answer is giving the kids $15 an hour or not, just, food for thought.

Portland, OR, hit an all time record high temp earlier this week at 116 degrees Fahrenheit. For comparison, that’s a higher temp than has ever been recorded in Texas. The east and west coasts have both seen record heat in recent days while the deep South has been enjoying below average temps for this time of year. But wait, there’s more…

Hurricane Elsa just became the year’s first tropical storm to reach hurricane status. Currently playing havoc in the Caribbean it could make landfall in Florida early next week then hit the Georgia coast. If your holiday plans include the beach, might want to get out of there sooner rather than later.

A brief history of Baptist Hymnals. This is a picture I took a few years ago of hymnals shelved in the old choir room at Unity Baptist Church. When I posted this pic to a Southern Baptist group on Facebook this week, someone replied that The Modern Hymnal needed to be part of this collection. The Modern Hymnal is also a Southern Baptist songbook, published by Broadman in 1926. All of the volumes pictures above we have several copies of. I managed to find one copy and the cover is barely recognizable. But I learned something about Baptist Hymnals this week and the rest of that book looks better than the cover.

We asked them to #FreeBritney and they released Bill Cosby. The specifics of this decision involved testimony that Cosby gave in a civil case, under the impression that if he incriminated himself that testimony would not be used to bring criminal charges. Cosby spent nearly three years in prison and at age 83 was reunited with family for the first time this week. During his incarceration he insisted no one visit and he only communicated with family by telephone.

The official Twitter account of KFC follows exactly 11 people: the five members of the Spice Girls and six different guys named Herb. That’s right, The Colonel follows 11 Herbs and Spices.

One of the gifts I got on Father’s Day was a bag of chocolate coins. Pictured above is a chocolate coin made in the image of an American one cent piece… in other words, penny candy.

Come on. Johannah gave me the candy, I’m a dad, I took that picture myself, that’s an original dad joke right there.

The 4th of July is tomorrow. Every year we hear about concern for vets and others with PTSD. The images below were posted by three people that deal with PTSD. I’m not saying it’s okay for anyone to be inconsiderate. But there are always two sides to every story and a view we sometimes don’t hear about are those vets that admit fireworks may be hard to deal with but that doesn’t become everybody’s problem. Men and women fought and died to give us the freedoms we enjoy in the United States and celebrate on Independence Day. For perspective, consider these points of view in addition to others you will hear this weekend. The names and profile images have been removed.
