Parable of the Sower (Fling the Gospel)

sowing_seedsIn Mark chp 4, one of the parables Jesus shares is the Parable of the Sower.  If you didn’t just click the link to Mark 4, it may be that you know this parable well.  I hope you either know this story already, or at least take the time to read it now.  After telling this particular parable, Jesus goes on to explain its meaning.  The seed is the gospel, and what happens illustrates many things that could happen to those who hear the gospel shared.  What I want to foucs on for a moment is exactly what Jesus meant by “went out to sow.” Continue reading

Parable of the Talents

Jesus gave many different analogies of what the Kingdom of God is like.  In Matthew 25 we read the parable of the talents.  After he finishes this parable, he goes on to describe the final judgement.  Earlier in chp. 25 is the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, which teaches us to always be prepared.  We do not know the day and hour of his return; but he will return.  The parable of the talents is a lesson to believers to take good care of what has been entrusted to them. Lessons from the Prodigal Son

Luke 15:11-24

The Parable of the Prodigal Son. It’s an old favorite. Beginning with chapter 10 and going all the way through 20, Luke basically recalls one parable after another. There’s a lot of good stuff in there, but this story is perhaps the best known; and most frequently taught. There are still good lessons we can learn from it.

Let’s begin by looking at the father in this story. He’s not your typical Jewish father. When the younger son asks for his inheritance, he’s saying in essence that he is tired of waiting for the old man to die. It would have been an appropriate response to take the young man to the gates of the city and stone him to death. Continue reading
